Palace of Culture and Science was a "gift" from Soviet Russia to the people of Warsaw, and intended as a monument to "the inventive spirit and social progress" Built in 1952-1955 to the design of a Russian architect, Lev Rudniev, it resembles Moscow's Socialist Realist tower blocks. Measuring just over 230 m including the spire, it has a volume of more than 800 000 cubic m. The interiors are said to feature many architectural and decorative elements, which were removed from stately homes after World War II. The attics on the building were inspired by those on bulidings in Kraków, Baranów Sandomierski and Krasiczyn.
